Hobby Boss A-10 Warthog

The Details

Kit: Hobby Boss 1/48 A-10 Thunderbolt
Aftermarket: Eduard Color Interior
Finishing: Vallejo Model Air main colors. Various acrylics for detail painting.

Kit at a glance:

The research I did in preparation for purchasing an A-10 kit seemed to place the Hobby Boss offering at the top all around. It has been regarded as one of Hobby Boss’ better kits, and my experience with the build was entirely pleasant. There are no fit problems to worry about. The kit does seem to have some accuracy issues around the engines specifically. It looked enough like an A-10 to satisfy my needs.

The biggest weakness was the cockpit detail. The instrument panel was just lazy and the supplied decal looked like something that belonged in a Nintendo 64 video game with it’s neon green panels and buttons. I opted to go with an Eduard color PE set. Some people don’t like these, but I think the subtle raised detail is closer to scale than found on most resin sets. The color fidelity is a lot better (usually) than anyone is going to accomplish with a brush.
